Origins (1994 to 1996)

In 1994, James Gage began recording music at age 13 using a basic play school recording device. Inspired by early West Coast hip hop, he started rapping over instrumental B sides from artists like Dr. Dre and classic gangsta rap records.

After moving from the Bay Area to Kentucky, he met KC and Jake Fogle. Together they formed Ca$h Roll Recordz, a name inspired by Death Row Records and Cash Money Records.

The Mixtape Era (1995 to 1997)

Under the name $woop, James and KC began recording music using handheld recorders, car stereos, and phone played instrumentals. Their first project, Playaz Pride, was distributed locally on handmade cassette tapes.

This era defined the DIY foundation of Ca$h Roll Recordz and established their underground identity.

Studio Breakthrough (1997 to 1999)

With access to early home computers and recording tools like Sound Recorder and RealPlayer, the group began experimenting with digital production.

Their first studio project, Hard Tymez, marked their official entry into professional recording. The single The World Keeps Spinning gained college radio play and early recognition.

Underground Expansion (1999 to 2003)

Projects like The Church and Killing Fieldz expanded their reach across the Midwest underground scene. Touring and collaborations helped grow their fan base and reputation.
