Today I’m sitting down and reviewing a few tracks from Almighty $mokey.
Almighty $mokey is an upcoming rapper from Oxnard, California and reached out to me about a review, so of course.
He doesn’t have a album out yet, but he has several singles on his Spotify page so we will start with track one..

1. Kira: Kira starts off with a vocal sample I’m not familiar with it, but it’s pretty cool, I’m assuming it comes from an Anime cartoon or something of that nature. When the beat starts I’m expecting a dark vibe, but Almighty $mokey start rapping, about selling dope to fiends, ducking cops and the average gangsta rap themes. I find the vocal quality to be average, but the overall mix sounds decent. The lack of emotion gives the song a bland vibe and doesn’t give me that grime vision the beat is screaming to me. I do like the delivery, $mokey seems to have a nice laid back vibe, and with the right beat selection he could have something special. Rap is a art and art takes time to perfect.

2. 7 Deadly Sins: Another dark evil type beat, which are some of my favorites. The song starts with the chorus
and I actually kind of like it, it’s a catchy repetitive chorus, the problem is when the rap comes in it’s the same exact
cadence and delivery. I find the delivery to be very basic and elementary The actual written is pretty basic. I like the
message in the song, detailing drug addiction , and how it destroys people, this song is a huge turn from the first song where $mokey says he is making the drugs to sell. I’m trying to determine in this one if $mokey is portraying the drug or if he just story telling. Pretty decent song, but could definitely benefit from better writing and wordplay..

3. Byrdz: I absolutely love this beat.. I did not expect this type of song over such a sad instrumental. I feel like the
song choice is horrible for this beat. The song is pretty much detailing getting high, making crack, and basically staying high. The delivery is once again very basic and un creative. The second rapper is decent, his double up vocals are way to loud, but his delivery is a blessing on this song. I don’t have much to say about this one other than the 2nd rapper saving it from being completely skippable.

4. FroZen: “I’ll make you freeze like its frozen” The punchlines and word play aren’t very creative. This song has more emotion than the other songs, I see some growth on this song, its a little more up beat, but the instrumental is still laid back. I hear a lot of inspiration from other rappers with the adlibs. The chorus is kind of catchy and I could see this song being better if the beat selection matched the song. $mokeys music is similar to trap music, but his beats seem to be Horrorcore or Grime street beats. I like how on this song there is a different vibe from the hook and the verses. The song has some decent lines in the rap verses compared to the vibe of the chorus…

5. RIP:  Another amazing beat. Off bat the adlibs are loud. not sure what the “yeh yeh” sound is .This song is also
heavily influenced by current rappers. I thought this was going to be a song about dead friends, but this song appears to I like the concept of the song “Rolling with my allies till we RIP”. It’s very repetitive. This song is telling me $mokey will shoot you if you say something out of line. It’s so repetitive it’s hard to listen to ..

Overall I think Almighty $mokey has a lot of work to do as far as becoming a better song writer. Advancing the word play and creation process on pairing songs with beats will allow this artist to find his sound I believe. I honestly love the beats on every song, but using Lo-fi beats for 808 melodic style songs for me doesn’t fit. I did mention the songs being repetitive and we have to remember that repetitive songs are the ones that get stuck in your head, so that’s a huge plus for $mokey… Not too bad.
